New program for all cafe visitors fights food insecurity
A program aimed at empowering UVM Medical Center community members to lend a hand through the gift of food made its debut in summer 2017.
Through “Pay it Forward,” employees and customers will be able to donate money to a fund that will support coupons for a free meal at the Harvest Café. Donations can be made by “rounding up” to the next dollar when you pay for your own meal at the Harvest Café or by giving any denomination of cash, payroll deduction or credit card.
Employees, patients, their friends and families in need will be able to pick up a meal ticket at the entrance to the Harvest Café, to be presented at the cash register. Meal tickets will be limited to one per customer per day.
“This program recognizes that, sometimes, everyone needs a little help,” says Diane Imrie, director of Nutrition Services. “The real faces of hunger are not always what you think; you might work alongside someone who has to skip a meal or more. We want to send the message that when unexpected things happen, our community is here to help.”
The program has received initial support through a $25,000 donation from the Hannaford Foundation.
